Mahoma Lake Trail Trek(One Day)
This trail takes you to explore a cross section of the scenic Rwenzori mountains. The trail is the main route through Nyakalengija-Mihunga gate that leads to the high peaks in the Rwenzoris. On this one day mahoma trip, you will traverse the lower slopes of the mountains finishing at Lake Mahoma where the trail will again descend you back to the park gate. The entire trip can be completed in 6-7 hours, and can be done as a one day hike. During this trip, you will explore some of the 70 mammals and 217 birds that are found in Rwenzori that include 19 species that are endemics to the Albertine Rift, as well as some of the world’s rarest plants. The plant life is mixture of lush forest, bamboo forest, heather, everlasting flowers, giant lobelia and a multitude of plant life endemic to this mountain.
Itinerary
Arrive in the foothills of Rwenzori Mountains at Nyakalengija. Arrival day from your previous destination you will be taken to your accommodation place, as either Ruboni community camp, Snow Heights,Rms Lodges or Rwenzori Turacco.
Walk in the village, meet the local people, and eat the fresh fruits and vegetables from the Rwenzori foothills.In the afternoon, you will be briefed by out guide and introduce to you the other team.Check all the luggage to approve if you have packed all the inessentials.This is the day you will determine what to hire and put everything together before dinner.
Journey Begins: Start trekking from the base camp (1615m) to Omuka Omusinga where you can have a rest with yourl guide. You will trek through a lush forested ridge with breathtaking and the Mubuku river trailing along the valley. Common wildlife on the trail you might see include Blue Monkeys, Black & White Colobus Monkeys, Chimpanzees(if luck day) and the famous one/two or three horned chameleons. The forest is home to a multitude of birds with the Rwenzori Turaco as the most favorite bird of the day.
From Omuka Omusinga to the first camp Nyabitaba where you can rest, eat and drink and continue to your final destination Lake Mahoma within a hike of 2-3hrs from the first camp.Rest at the lake while taking great memorial photos and videos and finish enjoy the great & largest first lake in Rwenzori Mountains.
Complete the Mahoma trail trek day to Nyakalengija gate. From Lake Mahoma descend to the base camp via Nyabitaba camp through the central circuit trail.The trail again will be forested with heather and bamboo forest before you pass by Nyabitaba camp and view the great portal peaks and of course the Mubuku valley and descend to the park gate. Common sight will be the lush forested trail, monkeys and the horned chameleons. Arrive to the gate in the afternoon/evening to Transfer from the base camp to Kampala, Uganda’s capital city or any other destination of choice.
